About us ๐
Hi there ๐
Somalis for Sustainability is a Somali-led climate and sustainability organisation founded in 2023 to empower Somalis globally to better understand and respond to the climate and environmental challenges affecting the Somali Horn.
Our work is grounded in the belief that sustainability is deeply connected to Somali identity, livelihoods, culture, health, displacement, food systems, water security, energy access, and future development. Through education, advocacy, events, research, storytelling, and community-led initiatives, we create spaces where Somali voices are heard, connected, and centred in climate action.
Our Journey
Since our inception, Somalis for Sustainability has grown from youth-led climate conversations into a global movement connecting diaspora communities, young people, professionals, academics, policymakers, civil society, and local partners.
Our journey began with participation in discussions on climate change and youth engagement in the Horn of Africa, followed by the UN Conference of Youth and COP28 in Dubai, where we contributed to global conversations on climate action.
In April 2024, we officially launched at the UK Parliament, bringing together stakeholders from the public sector, private sector, academia, NGOs, and the wider Somali community. Since then, our work has expanded across countries and platforms. We have taken part in the IEA Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa in Paris, the Diaspora Climate Champions workshop with the International Organisation for Migration in London, climate discussions in Canada, the UNECE Forum in Cyprus, and COP29 in Baku as part of Somaliaโs civil society delegation. With the support of local partners, we also hosted Somaliaโs first UN-backed Local Conference of Youth in Mogadishu.
Through this work, we continue to build climate literacy, strengthen Somali representation in climate spaces, support youth and diaspora leadership, and advance practical, community-informed solutions across areas such as water scarcity, clean energy, climate health, food systems, oceans, just transition, storytelling, and sustainable development ๐.
Looking Ahead
As we continue to grow, Somalis for Sustainability remains committed to connecting Somali communities across the world and ensuring that Somali knowledge, experiences, and leadership are central to climate solutions.
From Mogadishu to London, Toronto, Oslo, Doha, Baku, Belรฉm, and beyond, we are building a movement rooted in care, resilience, and collective action for a more sustainable future.
